KSNS is an organization of Nova Scotia music educators
established in 1991
KSNS is a provincial branch of the Kodály
Society of Canada.
Membership is open to all individuals, groups and associations
interested in Kodály-inspired music education.
Who Was Kodály?
Zoltan Kodály (1882-1976) was a well-known Hungarian
musician, composer, linguist, ethno-musicologist and professor.
Kodály devoted his life to creating a universal music
literacy, accessible to every child. He inspired teachers to
create and develop pedagogical methods and techniques for teaching
music.
What is Kodály Music Education?
It is music education with roots deep in the child's own
heritage. Through folk music, singing games and movement, students
inherit a love of self, others and music. At the heart of the
program is a concentration on aural development. This
training facilitates the internalization of musical concepts and
nurtures the self-assurance of participating individuals.
The child's program is based on aural presentation
followed by the visual. All concepts are organized so that
the growth of understanding is sequential and logical.
Materials used are of the highest calibre. With this base, the
child can manipulate sound, and create with awareness and
confidence. Thus Kodály's ultimate goal is reached as the
child becomes a creative, knowledgeable contributor within the
community and society.
