If only I had the money!

Does this sound familiar? Many of us have unique, innovative ideas to enhance literacy in our classrooms but so often we lack the funds. Did you know that NSTALL provides $500 grants to its members for this very purpose? Yes, that’s right. We have been providing professional development grant monies to fellow NSTALL members to help them develop ideas and projects centered around the concept of building literacy.

So, how do you apply? What do you do? What do you need?

Well, first you need an idea, plan, or objective with a strong literacy component. It can be any one of a variety of themes or disciplines, and can include media literacy. You will need to do some homework and explore which materials, aids, and books you will need, including the total cost; who will benefit; your implementation strategies; and how its effectiveness will be assessed. This prework is very important for a satisfactory application. It also helps you lay the foundation for a successful project.

Once you have completed your homework, you will then need to get an application form from NSTALL or write a proposal of your own. Each application or proposal, should have the following information included:

  1. Name of teacher, school, home address and postal code; phone numbers (home and school), e-mail address or fax number.
  2. The name or title of your project
  3. List the grade level(s) at which the project will be implemented and the number of students who will be participating in the project
  4. A description of the project with EACH of the following areas addressed in detail:
    1. Purpose: Explain your objective and what you hope to achieve; what is it you want to accomplish and why?
    2. Benefit: Who will benefit from the development of this idea; what opportunities do you want to provide the students; what will they gain?
    3. Projection of Costs: We encourage the purchase of books and the support of literacy; some costs can be for hardware if they support but do not overload your project; list all the materials (if you have the titles, include them) needed to implement and the costs (receipts will be requested). If you know where/from whom you will purchase the materials, list this. This information is important so take your time with the selection of materials and books.
    4. Implementation Strategies: This is a key component of your application and, when writing this part, detail is important. How will you use the materials; how will you achieve your goals/meet your objective? Be sure to clearly explain how your project or plan will operate with your students. (As you are planning what you need it helps to make notes about why you need them/how you will use them - this will then help you easily write about the strategies you will use) In addition, if you want to provide an example of a lesson or activity, we welcome this.
    5. Assessment of Effectiveness: It is essential that you describe how you will assess and evaluate your project to ensure that it is building success with literacy development. You can include methods and strategies you will use and what you will be evaluating. What is the purpose of your assessment? Which assessment tools will you use? How will you use them? Will it be just teacher assessment or will it include student assessment practices?

If you are a successful candidate, you will have to complete a detailed list of your expenses, and a brief write-up on the success of your project.

Now, this may seem like a lot of work but it’s no different than planning units and themes, and your project will be laid out in detail for parents, administrators, school board, and to share with fellow professionals. Taking the extra time now with your proposal strengthens its value.

We encourage our NSTALL members to apply for this development grant.

That’s where you will get the money for that great idea you want to implement in your classroom!! Good luck to all.
