The NSMEA offers financial assistance
for members of the association. Here is a brief summary of bursaries and
scholarships offered. Most of the applications are available in PDF format

Catherine Allison Memorial
Scholarship
The Catherine Allison Memorial
scholarship is offered annually by the Nova Scotia Music Educators Association.
The amount of this scholarship is determined annually.
Applicants for the scholarship must:
1. Be a native of Nova Scotia, or
a long-term resident of Nova Scotia, with at least six (6) years of education
in Nova Scotia.
2. Be enrolled at a university or teacher-training institution in a course
leading to a degree or certificate in music education.
3. Have successfully completed at least one (1) year of said course.
4. Enclose or forward a transcript of marks from both your high school
and university.
5. Have the application to the scholarship chair by May 15.
6. Enclose a short essay with your views on music education and your plans
regarding participation in the field following completion of courses.

Elizabeth & Forest
Fyfe Memorial Bursary
The Elizabeth & Forest
Fyfe Award is offered annually through a trust fund initiated by the late
Elizabeth M. Fyfe, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and managed by the Abilities
Foundation of Nova Scotia.
AWARD CRITERIA
1. The award is available to all residents of Nova Scotia, up to age
21, who function with a physical disability.
2. Those persons with a mobility disability will be given preference.
3. The award will be presented to a student enrolled in a Nova Scotia
educational or training institution.
4. The award may be used to cover costs associated with the applicant's
musical development, including, but not restricted to, tuition.
5. No individual shall receive the award in consecutive years unless determined
by the selection committee.

NSMEA Development Grant
The Nova Scotia Music Educators
Association offers development grants for special projectsand professional
development. Applicants must be active members of the NSMEA. Consideration
will be given to first-time applicants. The amount of the grant will not
exceed 50% of the actual cost of the project. Total available funds for
all grant applications are $750 in 20032004. The selection committee
determines the allocation of grants. All decisions made by the selection
committee are final.
Special Projects - To assist
with special projects relating to ongoing education in the field of music
(performance, music education or composition). Applications must be received
by November 15.
Professional Development -
To assist with study at a recognized university, institute or conducting
workshop. In selecting the recipient, the committee will consider the
direct application of the course to the present teaching assignment. Applications
must be received by August 31.
Upon completion of the special project
or study the successful applicant will agree to do one of the following:
(1) a presentation at the fall conference,
(2) an article for the NSMEA journal/Newsletter.

NSMEA Music Workshop
Funding Request
The NSMEA offers funding for
NSMEA members who undertake to present a workshop for music educators.
Applicant is offered fifty percent (50%) of the cost to a maximum of
$250.
CRITERIA
- Any NSMEA member may apply
- Application forms shall be submitted
no later than one month before the requested workshop.
- A complete financial statement
and a report of workshop highlights must be sent within seven (7)
days of the completion of the workshop to the NSMEA Professional
Development Committee. A cheque will then be forwarded.
- Funding will be allotted for the
first two (2) workshop requests. Any funding requests thereafter
will be dependent upon the state of the annual NSMEA budget. Preference
will be given to first time applicants.
- Funding requests will be granted
at the discretion of the Professional Development funding committee.
The decision of the Professional Development committee will be final.

Summer Study Bursary
Application
Ten scholarships of $100
each are being offered by the NSMEA. Application is open to any music
student attending Grade 12 or under in Nova Scotia. Priority will be given
to first time applicants. Bursaries are to be used to defray costs at
any summer music camp. The decision of the selection committee will be
final.
The application must be accompanied
by:
- A letter written by the applicant
indicating your interests in summer study and your specific needs;
- A letter of recommendation from
your music teacher, who is an active member of NSMEA, indicating specific
recommendations regarding progress, potential and responsibility. An
additional letter from a music teacher who is not a member of NSMEA
is also acceptable.
All Summer Study applications will
automatically be considered for the Frances Tyrrell Memorial Summer Study
Bursary. Frances Tyrrell was a music educator and the Music Supervisor
for the former Halifax CountyBedford District School Board. Priority
will be given to applicants who demonstrate leadership qualities in their
involvement with music. The successful applicant will receive an award
of $150 to defray the cost of a summer music camp, plus a commemorative
plaque.
Applications must be postmarked
no later than May 30.
The successful applicant will be notified on June 11.
