NSMEA is an organization of professional music educators who believe that music is an integral part of the core curriculum, and who promote the concept that music is one of the most basic elements in educating the whole person.

NSMEA Aims

1. To promote and advance music education in Nova Scotia.

2. To hold conferences, meetings and exhibitions for the discussion of problems and exchange of ideas on matters relating to music education.

3. To facilitate communication between the Department of Education and music educators throught the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.

NSMEA Goals

1. Music education provided by specialist teachers specifically trained in music education.

2. Quality music programs available to Nova Scotians of all ages.

3. Representation of the views and concerns of the music education profession in Nova Scotia.

PARTNERSHIPS

CANADIAN MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION
NSMEA is an affiliate organization of the Canadian Music Educators Association(CMA). Dues paid to the provincial organization include membership in CMA. This entitles the members to all publications, conferences, and projects of the national association. The President of NSMEA is a member of the CMA Board of Directors.

MUSIC EDUCATION ORGANIZATIONS
NSMEA collaborates with other provincial music education organizations and often serves as a liaison bringing together members form various interest groups for professional development and advocacy activities. NSMEA communicates regularly with the following organizations:

  • Nova Scotia Band Association
  • Nova Scotia Choral Federation
  • Nova Scotia Chapter of the Kodaly Society of Canada
  • Maritime Chapter of Carl Orff Canada, Music for Children
  • String Music Atlantic

ARTS ORGANIZATIONS
NSMEA believes that partnerships with all arts organizations are very important. It welcomes the opportunity to be involved in joint projects that involve collaboration with members of the visual arts, theatre and dance communities. Recent activities have included partnering with the following organizations:

  • Educational Drama Association of Nova Scotia
  • Visual Arts Nova Scotia
  • Dance Nova Scotia
