The Teachers' Provincial Agreement and the Education Act require all teachers in Nova Scotia to be certified by the Department of Education. Requirements for public school teacher certification were established through a consultative process between the Department and the Union. The current certification framework came into effect on August 1, 2000. Since that time, small adjustments to the regulations have been made by mutual agreement.

The rules and regulations for teacher certification are much more accessibly organized on the Department of Education Certification Home page at http://certification.ednet.ns.ca/

Teachers should always obtain approval from the Department of Education Certification Office prior to starting a program for certification upgrading. A set of ten steps has been written to help facilitate the process of working with the Certification Office.
