Council elects Les Walker as honourary member

Recently retired NSTU executive staff member, Les Walker was elected as an honourary member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union during the 80th Annual Council, May 18 to 21.

Walker started working at the NSTU Central Office in public relations and communications in 1970. He created and implemented countless public relations programs and campaigns over his 30-year career with the Union, including Schools Today, Writer’s Block, the Kerr-Plunk campaign, and last year’s Voices of Concern campaign.

From 1970 to 1992 he edited The Teacher, and ran the Union’s public relations programs. In 1992 he took over the new, separate public relations department. He was a PR liaison with colleagues in the Atlantic Provinces, a past regional director of the Association of Educational Publishers, a past regional liaison for the Canadian Association of Communicators in Education, member of the National School Public Relations Association, and past executive director of the Canadian Education Press Association.

Prior to joining the NSTU, Walker was a news reporter and advertising copywriter with The Chronicle-Herald.
