Leadership Symposium
PAthways to PRogress

Delta Halifax
August 16-18, 2017

The NSTU Provincial Executive has accepted a recommendation from staff to take a one year abeyance from the Leadership Skills Development Institute.  In its place this summer, we will be holding a leadership symposium for local and provincial leaders to reflect upon experiences from the last 18 months and begin to prepare strategies that will take us into the negotiation of a new contract in 2019, perhaps with the same provincial government.

PAthways to PRogress will focus on four key areas: Contract Negotiations, Job Action, Public Affairs / Public Relations, and Policy and Operating Procedures.  Each Local will be invited to send a team consisting of the following delegates:

  • The Provincial Executive Member(s) for their Local / Bargaining Unit
  • One Local President or Bargaining Unit Leader
  • One Vice President of Public Affairs / Public Relations / Communications
  • One Appointed Delegate for Each Local or Bargaining Unit.
  • RRC Chair – if different from the President

The goal is to have the aforementioned group work in teams and participate in workshops dedicated to all four areas.  During these 90 minute workshops, participants will receive a brief background presentation by staff. They will then engage in reflection on what has occurred during the past two years in the area with regards to their Local context.  The final 45 minutes will be dedicated to beginning to develop strategies that will help the NSTU move forward over the next two years leading into negotiations in 2019.  The teams will circulate through all of the workshops, so input is received in the four areas from all Locals / Bargaining Units.

Due to the ongoing legal challenge with Saint Francis Xavier University, the NSTU Provincial Executive has decided that PAthways to PRogress will be held at the Delta Halifax on August 16th, 17th and 18th.  The format will remain similar to the Skills Institute, with registration beginning at 4:00pm on Wednesday and finishing on Friday at approximately 11:00am.  There will be a couple additions to the symposium.  They are:

  • Thursday at 3:30 - 5:00 – Health and Wellness Sessions - Optional
  • Friday at 10:30 – 11:00 – A Wrap-up Session dedicated to identifying common issues and strategies moving forward.

The Provincial Executive have made the decision that for this year only Professional Associations will not have delegates in attendance.  Professional Associations are encouraged to forward issues or concerns to a Local Team or by contacting Betty Jean Aucoin at bjaucoin@staff.nstu.ca .

Local Presidents will be requested to confirm names of their respective participants by filling out the attached form and returning it to Ann Pyne by June 16th.  (apyne@staff.nstu.ca
