NSTU appoints new executive director, Adrien Amirault

The provincial executive of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union has appointed Adrien Amirault, executive director of the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association (NWTTA) as the new executive director of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, effective September 1, 2018.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to the union that’s always been supportive of me and my career. I’m really excited about it,” says Amirault. “I am looking forward to working, in partnership with the elected members, as well as the staff of the NSTU in serving Nova Scotia teachers in the work we do.”

Amirault has held the top post at NWTTA since January 1, 2017, after serving as the organization’s assistant executive director since August 2012. Prior to joining NWTTA, Amirault was an educator in Nova Scotia and Northwest Territories for 27 years. He is a music teacher by training and has served in classroom and administrative roles, primarily with the Chignecto Central Regional School Board.

He was an active member of the NSTU in a number of roles including vice president of communications for the Cumberland Local as well as serving on NSTU’s Insurance Trustees, supporting active and retired members with their health, insurance and wellness benefits.

Amirault has a Bachelor of Music Education from Acadia University and a Master of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University.

He replaces current executive director, Joan Ling who is retiring at the end of July.

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union represents almost 10,000 public school teachers, and teachers who work for the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Since 1895, it has worked to improve the quality of public education for children and youth in Nova Scotia, while promoting and advancing the teaching profession.
