Creating Safer Spaces

We begin our morning with some presentations from local service providers on how they attempt to create safer spaces in their contexts. The discussion will then be turned over to our members at tables to consider how to improve safety in school environments, along with Q & A for the panel.
Morning Session - A

Queer educators discuss navigating the school system and the unique situations they encounter in interactions with students, colleagues and parents from microaggressions to more direct discrimination and/or violence.
This collaborative and interactive workshop will begin with a high-level presentation of research findings on education leadership for gender justice. It will then share and test new materials designed to support educators to engage in gender justice advocacy in schools, in and outside of the classroom. Gender justice encompasses countering all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination and deepening gender equity and inclusion for students and staff of all gender identities.
Join with other educators to break down one title from the province’s GBV curricular list. This session is sure to provide some teaching ideas as well as spark discussion on how to handle issues it might raise. Participants will have read the book in advance; led by a NSATEE executive member.
The theme of this conference is a heavy one, so consider spending time in conversation with colleagues about safer spaces, curricular topics, or teaching approaches for this material. Facilitated by a member of our executive (this is in addition to a low-sensory space available at any time).
Meet more intimately with representatives from a variety of local organizations that support children, women and families who have been affected by violence. Each representative will have their own space to facilitate discussion and Q & A.
